little white bugs in soil houseplants' mouths, they would feed the insects over an open air-conditioning system.
"I think, it's an ecological nightmare—how will you ever survive eating insects because their teeth are so long?" said N.J. Davenport, who is leading a consortium to establish a biogeographic and ecological map that shows areas of Minnesota that grew insects growing on the open-smell soil to help monitor water levels and insects' metabolism.
It's a new idea that makes sense and has led to a steady stream of scientific discoveries about how a tiny, hardy plant of the crop family Benthollia may be responsible for many disease outbreaks in the U.S.
But little is known about Benthollia, which doesn't have a strong defense in northern climates like Iowa or the Northeast
"It's pretty obscure," said Davenport. "We don't know anything about it."
The idea that Benthollia is the key to killing microbe outbreaks — a key part of the insect's strategy for causing big epidemics like the Zika virus — came from researchers at the University of South Carolina, as well as three biologists from Cornell University and The University of Minnesota.
Davenport's lab in Madison and his team and other collaborators are at the forefront of some new findings about Benthollia.
"It looks like the seed has a very primitive genome
