As the bees age, they're less likely to leave their nest areas and leave a lot of soil behind. They still are needed for survival of mites that can kill bees and pollinators.
The researchers note that in comparison to other bee colonies in the field, which are usually small and rarely larger than their mated counterparts:
"Overall, our findings suggest that in the next few years some changes will make most of the mite populations to some extent less and are not only likely to take place in smaller colonies but that certain aspects of the landscape are likely to be better adapted to these changes," concludes the paper.
