"We are not getting much more or less from this," said Jeff Miller, an associate scientist and a professor of ecology at the University of Pennsylvania.

The researchers discovered the plant at the center while monitoring the area from a distance of 15,000 feet, about 50 miles from the plant's center.

"The soil has been very hard to grow in the area, and some areas have as much soil as there should be, so these kind of unusual soil conditions can be fairly common," said Miller.


In the end, he estimated he got 75 percent of the land from the state of Pennsylvania.
