In a short time, the world's largest garden and landscaping organization came up with a clever idea which is to produce a new kind of wooded garden that is much more aesthetically pleasing and less wasteful than any typical home garden.
In 2008, Cornell University students started a lab called Sustainability Solutions to produce a growing garden that works by using sunlight, compost, algae and sunlight itself.
This project is an impressive attempt to make things easier for people who live on a lot of tropical land, but they're also trying to make a growing space greener and healthier than what you'd call "home garden" nowadays, which means a lot more light and less pollution.
"It's like the old days when the sky was so clear," said Michael McHenry of Cornell's Department of Forestry. "That's been a very efficient way of getting people to live on less rainforest and less desert [in California], so people are getting a much more positive sense of community here."
He explained that he had to build something similar in New York City, which means doing experiments on animals like rats that have very short tails and long necks, which reduces their overall body weight. This also helps minimize other environmental problems like pesticides and pesticide spills.
